DON’T GET HUNG UP ON DEFLECTION – A LITTLE FLEXIBILITY GOES A LONG WAY
It is interesting to see some wide and varying opinions in the market on the subject of pole deflection and as the trend appears to be adopting taller and stronger structures, it could be well worth the time to explore whether to be more flexible. The purpose of this article is to investigate the importance of pole deflection and the impact of specifying a deflection limit.
There are of course some valid reasons to consider the impact on the line around clearances if tensions/sags are not maintained due to excessive pole deflections. However, when I have asked around, some engineers believe that over-specifying deflection is a hangover from using concrete poles in the past.
Either way, we seem to have an unhealthy obsession with meeting strict deflection criteria without really knowing why. It is my opinion that this may negate some of the superior benefits of steel poles and therefore build unnecessary costs into some projects.
A technical whitepaper is being written on this now with expert input from a range of power industry experts from designers to asset owners and we’ll draw on overseas experience for a balanced view. The article will feature in T&D Magazine and appear here when published. Check back soon for updates.
