A friend at an Australian telecommunications company recently told me that they couldn’t use steel poles because they weren’t stiff enough and so bend too much in the wind when compared to concrete. I couldn’t believe the MYTH that I was hearing, especially as some of the biggest telecommunication poles and towers around the world are made of steel. There are many compelling reasons that steel communication poles are chosen so often ahead of concrete poles:

FACT 1 – Steel is stronger than concrete; the steel Gateway Energy use in our poles is 450MPa, around  10 times stronger than concrete.

FACT 2 – Concrete poles rely on steel reinforcing as the basis of their strength, otherwise they would crack and fail.  Concrete is good in compression, quite useless in tension.

FACT 3 – Gateway Energy can design our poles using the latest in software and non-linear analysis to accurately model deflections at certain points on the pole ensuring that we meet deflection requirements. We can easily design a pole for maximum antenna deflection angles.

I think we can safely say – MYTH BUSTED!  But if wasn’t quite enough to convince you to ensure that steel is strongly considered in your communication pole solutions, then this may.

  • Not only can Gateway Energy design a pole with a purpose, we can also design and fabricate with all the attachments you will ever need including mounting brackets, ladders, platforms, cable tray brackets, etc. No high-cost extras that are required on a concrete pole.
  • Steel communication poles and masts are generally cheaper to purchase, much cheaper than concrete for taller poles over 30m, and much cheaper to install.
  • Steel poles are much lighter and this can mean huge savings in transport to site, ground works for heavy lifts, and crane costs to erect. It just doesn’t make sense not to compare.
